Pergamum
“To the angel of the church in Pergamum write:
These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword.
I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.
Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: You have people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality.
Likewise you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.
Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.”
Revelations 2:12-16
To the Church of Pergamum Jesus at first compliments. He says that they remain true to his name despite where they live. Pergamum was the seat of emperor worship for Asia Minor.
It was also the place were the first Christian martyr was killed, someone named Antipas. Christ notes that even during this time when Antipas was being killed probably a time of great persecution the church kept its faith.
However Christ goes on to say that,
“You have people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality.”
The reference to Balaam here is most likely saying that they have people in their midst that compromise with the worldliness.
There’s also a reference to the Nicolaitans a heretical sect within the early church that made a compromise with pagan society.
From what we know they taught that spiritual liberty gave them leeway to practice immorality and idolatry.
God does not want such things within the church.
God wants his church to be pure and faithful to his teachings. There can be no compromise with the ways of the world.
God’s word as the old phrase goes, “is yes and amen”. There is no room for compromise. Either we stand by and teach the word of God from the Bible or we do not. There is no gray area.
If anyone says there is they are wrong
Think about it.
