Laidicea

Laodicea

“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.
I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!
So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.
I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent.
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.
To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
                                                                                                        Rev 3:14-22
Laodicea was the wealthiest city in Phrygia during Roman times it was famous for its banking, textile industry and medical school.
Within the text Christ uses the references to the three banking, textiles and medicine.
Christ tells them they are lukewarm and that he would rather have them hot or cold not in between.
The problem with Christians who are lukewarm they can think they are doing fine but are not. They are just existing and don’t realize it.
There are many churches like that today. They are doing the same old thing week after week, year after year and getting the same old result. Then they wonder why their congregations are dying.
They are spiritually lukewarm and not listening to the what Christ wants.
Christ’s call is to buy the finest gold from him one that will make them spiritually rich.  A gold that has no contaminants.
Such gold is God’s wisdom and knowledge. With this they can help people for all eternity and help people find their way to a life with God.
He calls them to put on his robes of white that covers the wrongs the things that bring shame to them.
Christ’s robes of white cover our spiritual nakedness and make us presentable to God.
The salve he places on our eyes heals our blindness and gives us spiritual insights into day to day living for him and lets us see how we can best serve God.
Jesus says,
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”
His call here is to those Christians who are lukewarm. Who continue on day to day doing the same old thing getting the same old result.
It’s a call to change what they are doing and seek his wisdom and knowledge on how to present the gospel in this day and age.
He promises,
“To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.”
Think about it.
