The Cross
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”
Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.”
1 Corinthians 1:18-25.
The cross, the death and resurrection of Jesus does not seem right to many in the world today. Many ask the question, Why would God come into the world? Why would He become a man? And especially why would He choose to die for the man he created? Couldn’t he just wave a hand and show His power to everyone?
It’s true God could show his power to everyone in a miraculous way but that would not necessarily create true followers.
God does not want to force people to follow Him. He asks people to do that voluntarily.
God wants true followers. That’s why he asks that we exercise our faith.
The writer of Hebrews states,
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Hebrews 11:6.
The apostle Paul reminds us,
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Ephesians 2:8,9.
Our salvation and our eternity with God is determined by our faith in him not necessarily our intellectual knowledge.
It’s easy to say “I believe there is a God.” but not have faith in Him.
True followers believe in something even if they don’t necessarily have physical proof.
Scientist do this all the time. Look at Albert Einstein. He believed in his theories all his life. Yet it is only recently a hundred years after he proposed the theories that some of them are being proved.
So it is with faith in God. We may not see God but we can by deduction say there is a God. The psalmist states,
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
Psalm 19:1.
By looking around us from the smallest subatomic particle to the largest galaxy all are in order all are mathematically perfect allowing scientist to predict not only their presence but how they work.
This I believe is the hand of God the creator pointing man to himself. So no one can deny there is a God.

“We may ignore, but we can nowhere evade, the presence of God.”

Lewis also said,
“Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.”

The choice is up to you. The gospel of John records Jesus putting a question to Martha we all must answer in our life,
“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
“Yes Lord” she told Him, “I believe you are the Christ the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”
John 11:25,26.
