  Before the gods

The Psalmist writes,

“I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart;

 before the "gods" I will sing your praise.” 

                                                                   Psalm 138:1.

As I write this its 2022 and I think there are more “gods” in the world today than in the past. Things we may not think as gods. Money and materialism perhaps being the biggest, especially here in North America where I live.

It seems here in North America everyone is striving to be wealthy. It even extends to those who call themselves Christian evangelist. Men and women who say God wants you to be wealthy. And you will get that way if you have enough faith (and of course give to their ministry).

Such men and women have fallen away from the true faith.

Still that aside, the true believer in Christ Jesus is surrounded by a myriad of “gods” who want to pull them away from the faith.

In such an environment we as believers in Christ need to stand out. We need to turn to the scriptures and praise the LORD with our whole heart no matter the circumstance we are in.

Daily I read of believers in Jesus around the world who must meet in secret for fear of being persecuted, attacked, murdered, and even thrown in prison because they choose to follow Christ.

Men and women who despite the risks, worship and praise God out of a pure belief in Christ Jesus. Beliefs they are willing to die for.

Question; To those Christians who live in the United States, Canada and other western democracies, that live in freedom. Do you worship God in spirit and in truth openly?

Train up

Train up
Matthews Gospel records,
“Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. 
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:13, 14.
It has been said Christianity is just one generation from extinction. People are not born Christian. Even if someone goes to church all their life dose not mean that they are Christian.
    Each individual when they are old enough and mature enough must decide for themselves if they wish to follow Christ.
That being said it is imperative that we as believers in Christ Jesus bring our children up to know God in a personal way.
Scripture tells us,

“Train a child in the way he should go, 

and when he is old he will not turn from it.” 

                                               Proverbs 22:6.

Notice scripture tells us to “train up a child in the way he should go” NOT force our faith on the Child. We must present our faith to our children not only in word but in deed also.
You cannot force your children or anyone into becoming a follower of Christ Jesus. Ultimately it is a decision of faith between the individual and God.
We can and must however live our faith as they say 24/7 in front of our children and those around us.
Francis of Assisi wrote,

“The deeds you do may be the only sermon 

some persons will hear today” 

                                          Francis of Assisi.

We, whether we like it our not are preaching a sermon every minute of every day to our children. If our lives are not reflecting Christian values our children and those around us will see this and turn away from God.
Thus the questions become.
How are you living your life?
Is your life reflecting the love of God, the attributes of Christ Jesus?
Please think about it. 

Cheap Grace, Costly Grace

Cheap Grace, Costly Grace
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—  not by works, so that no one can boast.” 
Ephesians 2:8,9
Is the grace you received cheap or costly?
I came across this note from Dietrich Bonhoeffer,
"cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline. Communion without confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ."
Or, even more clearly, it is to hear the gospel preached as follows:
"Of course you have sinned, but now everything is forgiven, so you can stay as you are and enjoy the consolations of forgiveness." The main defect of such a proclamation is that it contains no demand for discipleship. 
In contrast to this is costly grace:
"costly grace confronts us as a gracious call to follow Jesus, it comes as a word of forgiveness to the broken spirit and the contrite heart. It is costly because it compels a man to submit to the yoke of Christ and follow him; it is grace because Jesus says: "My yoke is easy and my burden is light." 
Bonhoeffer’s argument is that Christianity and specifically  the church has become more secularised. Accommodating itself to society.
In doing so the gospel was “cheapened” and obedience to Christ gradually lost under all the ritual and formulas.
While Bonhoffer wrote this prior to his death in a German concentration camp in 1945 he could have been writing about the church today. Especially the church in North America.
There are many preachers out there that have a “formula” for receiving blessings and salvation from God.
They say pray this prayer or that prayer and you’ll get this or that. Give and it will be given to you. The mantra of the name it claim it crowd.
One television station we receive here in Canada from across the U. S. border seems to have a Christian version of everything from health food to beauty products to elixirs and other potions.
Other groups have watered down the gospel to the point of no effect. For them going to church is a pleasant thing to do each Sunday. A time to socialize.
These people need to heed the words of 2 Chronicles that are as true to day as when written.
“if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”  2 Chronicles 7:24.
When a woman caught in adultery was brought to Jesus John records the following,
“When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”  
Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. 
At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.  
Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 
“No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”  John 8:7-11.
Note here Jesus makes it clear that this woman who could have been stoned to death for her sin was told to go and leave her life of sin. She had been forgiven but Jesus said turn from what you are doing wrong.
Her forgiveness had to be accompanied by action.
This is what it should be like when we become a Christian. We have to leave our life of sin.
We cannot continue on. Paul writing to the Romans says
“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?  
By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” Romans 6:1,2
When we accept Christ into our lives we must be willing to give up our way of life if necessary, in order to live a new life for Christ.
By new way of life, what I’m saying is that if we have to change jobs then we should be doing so. If we need to change whom we associate with we need to be doing so. If we need to change our lifestyle completely then we should be willing to do so.
When we accept Christ into our lives we cannot continue doing the bad things we were doing prior to accepting him.
This is what I believe Bonhoffer meant by costly grace.
We need to be asking our selves are the things we are doing truly acceptable to Christ?

What god do you serve?

What god do you serve?
“Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.  
But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:14-15.
If you are a Christian which god are you following?
Many claiming to be Christians say they love God but fail to put God first in their lives. I’ve known many who skip church to go golfing or to a sporting event. I’ve known many who work excess overtime that they don’t really need instead of going to church.
There are many who skip a mid week bible study or service and do other things that are not of God.
Where do you stand?
How important is God in your life?
Are you truly willing to serve God and put Him first in your life?

A Holy Priesthood

A Holy Priesthood,

The apostle Peter writes,
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.  
Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 
Dear friends,
I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.  
Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.’ 
                                                                                       1 Peter 2:9-12.
The apostle Peter tells believers we are a holy priesthood.
Sadly too many people who claim to be Christian are not acting like a Holy priesthood. They act more like a pale imitation of the world.
If you look at some who claim to be Christian evangelist, pastors, and Christian programming in the media they resemble the world more than Christ. They are judging the world. They are making outrageous unsubstantiated claims. They are even picking fights with other faiths.
This is not what it is to be Christian.
To be Christian is to Love God, your neighbour and even your enemy. Jesus when asked,
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’  
This is the first and greatest commandment.  
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” 
                                                                                           Matthew 22:36-40.
Prior to saying that Matthew records Jesus as saying,
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”
                      Matthew 5:43-45.
The Apostle Paul said,
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
                                                                                                             Romans 12:18  
Jesus said,
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.”
                                                                                                    Matthew 5:9
The apostle Paul tells us what the results of the Holy Spirit working in a persons life is. He states,
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  
gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”  
                                                                                Galatians 5:22,23.
These are the signs of a true Christian.
The writer of Hebrews make it clear what Christians are suppose to do,
“Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.” 
Hebrews 12:14.
As the apostle Peter said,
“Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.”
Take a few minutes right now and pray. Ask God to show you your shortcomings. Ask God how you can live a more holy life. A life God will be pleased with.
Take time to evaluate the ministries outside your church that you support. To evaluate the Church you attend.
Ask God to lead you and direct in the paths of righteousness. To truly be someone who lives in peace. In whom those around you see holiness.
Francis of Assisi wrote something I believe all true Christians need to be asking God, when he wrote,

“Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love,

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand,

to be loved, as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.”

  Ask God to make you a peacemaker for as Jesus said,
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.”
                                                                                                      Matthew 5:9

An Idea for Christians

An Idea for Christians,

The Talmud states a truth that Christians I believe need to think about. It states,
“An aged man, whom Abraham hospitality invited to his tent, refused to join him in prayer to the one spiritual God.  Learning that he was a fire-worshipper.   Abraham drove him from his door.  That night God appeared to Abraham in a vision and said: ‘I have borne with that ignorant man for seventy years: could you not have patiently suffered him one night?”
                                                                               The Talmud.
As I look at those claiming to be Christians here in North America I see a lot of protests against things, everything from abortion to gay rights, to speaking out against Muslims and other things these so called Christians disagree with.
I say “so called Christians” because I wonder how committed to the cause of Christ they really are.
Even if they are Christians they definitely it seems, have no time to reach out and show love to those they disagree with.
The Apostle Paul wrote,
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.  
Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.”
                                      Romans 12:18,19.
Writing to the Corinthians Paul said,
“What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?  
God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked man from among you.” 
                                                                                           1 Corinthians 5:12,13.
It is not our job to judge people. We are to love God, our neighbour and even our enemy. We have no right to restrict the rights of anyone who is doing no harm in a secular democracy such as our own.
Jesus said,
“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”
              Matthew 10:16.
If we are acting as doves we are not attacking people or trying to restrict their rights.
Jesus also said,
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. 
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
                         Matthew 5:13-16.
All too many people calling themselves Christians these days in North America are protesting against things. They are cementing in the minds of non-believers that Christianity is a religion of “do not’s”.
In protesting against the rights of someone in a secular democracy such as we have in the west these people are at the very least being perceived as bigots. Who are intolerant.
This is not the Christianity I know.
Christianity to me is God reaching down to mankind and saying “I love you. Let me show you the way to heaven.”
I believe a great responsibility rests on the shoulders of Christians. We need to be able to sit down and have an open dialogue with non-Christians. Something we cannot do if we are protesting against them.
Jesus met with people of every strata in every circumstance of the society in which he lived. And even though He was the Christ and had the right to judge, he did not judge anyone while on this earth. Nor should we if we are truly his followers.
